Steeped in history, Temecula, the southern-most City of Riverside County, was settled by the Temecula Indians as early as 900 A.D. The area was explored by the Franciscans Padres in the late 1700s, who arrived over the mountains to the west from San Juan Capistrano. Used primarily as cattle country by Mission San Luis Rey, most of the records of early Temecula were lost in the great San Francisco earth quake of 1906.
But what is known is that Temecula was on the Butterfield Overland Stage route and had the first post office in southern inland California. Along with the stagecoach came the desperadoes who often robbed the stage, and Temecula lore is full of holdups and shoot outs.
Of course, the stagecoach also brought people who began to settle the valley in earnest. The Civil War brought an end to the Butterfield Stage and reliable transportation to and from Temecula was a problem until the rail road arrived in 1882.
Until the 1960s, the then small city of Temecula served both agriculture and the cattle industry. The founding of Rancho California, immediately adjacent to Temecula, signaled a major change as that area became the site of many real estate developments.
Temecula hasn’t left its agricultural roots behind entirely. Its mild climate and rich soil make the area perfect for growing wine grapes. As a result, the Temecula area has become famous for its wineries
Today, Temecula is a major stop along the I-15 corridor between San Diego and Los Angeles. The area offers reasonably priced homes, ranging from charming old cottages to lovely new homes in planned communities. There are mini-estates with custom homes and room for horses, avocado, lemon and lime groves with homes, and even luxury condominiums close to town.
With good schools, many cultural institutions and employment opportunities, Temecula real estate offers the best of the southern California countryside.
